Academy Award-Winning Director Bryan Fogel on “The Dissident”

Academy Award-winning filmmaker Bryan Fogel talks about his documentary, “The Dissident,” which offers an intimate portrait of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi who paid with his life for speaking freely.

On Oct. 2, 2018, Khashoggi, a Saudi Arabian native critical of the policies of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, entered the Saudi Arabian consulate in Istanbul and never emerged.

With exclusive access to the Turkish government’s evidence, Fogel’s film unearths secrets in a case that continues to have global implications.

Fogel is a film director, producer, author and playwright best known for directing the Oscar-winning 2017 documentary thriller, “Icarus.”

First Five Now is a Freedom Forum conversation that explores topical issues and features current newsmakers who are using the five freedoms of the First Amendment to guide their work.
