Freedom Forum trustee, friend and First Amendment champion.

1943-2025

Whereas, Michael J. Coleman has been a dedicated trustee of Freedom Forum, the Newseum and the Institute for almost two decades, with invaluable service on the Finance and Executive Committee; and

Whereas, Mike’s even-tempered nature and kindness earned him the respect and admiration of colleagues and community members alike, leaving a legacy of positive influence; and

Whereas, Mike was one of the first supporters of the Newseum, with his wife of more than 60 years, Mary Louise, and we appreciate their long and generous philanthropic support; and

Whereas, Mike’s extensive career at Gannett reflected his commitment to the First Amendment and a free press, rising from a reporter at The Saratogian to the longest-serving publisher of FLORIDA TODAY; and

Whereas, Mike also served as CEO of Cape Publications, president of the Gannett South Newspaper Group and president of Gannett’s newspaper holdings in the Midwest, and publisher of the company’s newspaper in Rockford, Illinois. He went on to found Cool Media Consultants; and

Whereas, Mike was cool, but also unpretentious and always had a word of encouragement for others. He is remembered as a strategic advisor helping the organizations he was a part of during significant periods of change and growth; and

Whereas, Mike generously served on the boards of numerous community organizations, including Ron Jon Surf Shop, Cypress Bank & Trust, the Brevard Zoo and the Maxwell C. King Center for the Performing Arts, demonstrating his profound commitment to civic engagement; and

Now, therefore, be it resolved that the board of trustees of Freedom Forum honors with the highest esteem the commitment and contributions of Michael J. Coleman to the First Amendment and journalism, and offer profound gratitude for his service, leadership and kindness.
